With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive

He Rourou Whai Painga is an ambitious, multi-centre dietary intervention study to explore the effects of eating a whole diet that includes high-quality New Zealand food and beverage products.

Over the last two years we have visited over 15 food producers all across the motu. Hearing the story of their businesses and highlighting why they were proud to be part of the study.

Dr Huhana Smith and Richard Anderson were generous enough to welcome us to their olive grove in Kuku, Horowhenua.

On a beautiful morning in October we captured the beauty of their grove, and interviewed Huhana about their product and involvement in the study.

As part of our travels we spent some time in Whakatū Nelson with Pic’s Peanut butter. We loved learning about what led such an iconic New Zealand business to take part in the study.

We were lucky enough to go behind the curtain in a bespoke tour of the factory to capture the magic in action. Pic’s Aotearoa focused business was a perfect fit for the He Rourou Whai Painga study.

As the study came to an end in early 2024, we set off for the capital once more to talk to the study lead, endocrinologist Dr Jeremy Krebs.

He explained the findings of the study, and the nuances of the results they gathered from the 100 participant families.

While we were local, we headed over to meet Tina, a participant who’s life was forever changed by He Rourou Whai Painga.

In the film we hear anecdotes from both Jeremy and Tina; two sides of a momentous scientific study.
